Rutgers football recruiting update for the week of 8/3

Committed players:

NJ QB Mike Bimonte committed to Rutgers on Friday. He was then followed by NJ RB Ben Martin on Monday.

Chevelle Buie credits David Rowe with his decision to attend Rutgers. Sounds like someone is in the hunt for a nickname.

The new 2010 roster is up on SK.com, with several incoming recruits notably absent. More thoughts on that later...

Uncommitted players:

NJ OT Josue Matias on his timetable.

Matias has not taken any visits but says he plans on visiting several schools soon. "I got to out there and see some of these places...I just don't know which shools I'm going to visit yet." He has not narrowed his list and says he does not have any plans to do so in the near future. "I think I'll commit in December," he said. "That seems like the right time because the season will be over."

And then Matias in another article seemingly confirms what most Rutgers fans were already assuming on the basis of spending three years with Coach Rotondi at Union Hill/City.

As he has said in the past, Matias thinks location and comfort level will be the two biggest factors in his decision. Though he will not necessarily choose the school closest to home, being able to travel to see his family is an important thing for him. His family is also pushing for him to take that into consideration.

Should Rutgers fans worry about UNC with NJ DE Max Issaka? Of course the Heels are really hitting MD and VA hard this year. I think they lead for a package deal of Branden Jackson and Delvon Simmons, so that presumably would tie up too many DL scholarships, although Issaka definitely fits their freak athlete profile.

Most of us are probably optimistic about NJ RB Savon Huggins at the moment, but the one thing you have to worry about is his upcoming trip to Florida. Looks like he has eliminated Pitt following Poteat's commit there.

"Right now it's down to Rutgers State, North Carolina, Penn State, Wisconsin, Florida, Georgia, Stanford, Notre Dame and Miami," Huggins says.

It doesn't like NJ WR Damiere Byrd will take an official visit to Rutgers. Hard to see him not signing with Florida.

"I haven’t been to Ole Miss, Pitt, West Virginia or Iowa. I think that’s about it."

Those are the four schools that it appears Byrd will officially visit. He didn’t rule out the possibility of taking a fifth visit, though he isn’t sure where he would go yet.

Haven't heard much on PA OL Brandon Clemons, so this sounds like good news

He visited Rutgers in the spring and this trip to South Carolina will be his first trip since then. He has no other trips planned for the summer right now. Clemons plans to take his official visits before making a decision and doesn't have favorites right now though Rutgers appears to be pretty strong with him.

What a surprise, NJ TE Jack Tabb is again talking up Florida.

"I liked them all a lot but Florida was probably the best. I didn’t know what to expect but I like how they feel about me. I felt really good leaving Florida. I would say that was probably the best trip."

Rutgers is in the early top three 2012 NJ LB Kaiwan Lewis.

Super enigma NY DE Ishaq Williams continues to say little.

MD S Nico Law hasn't played much organized football.

The latest on MD OT Donovan Smith.

"I’m still thinking about cutting my list in August," he said. "As soon as I thought it was easy I get more offers. I’m taking it day by day, it may have some impact on cutting my list, but I don’t see it delaying it."

Smith wraps up summer visits with an unofficial to Penn State tomorrow.

DC DT Kevin McReynolds is visiting schools on the West Coast.

MD CB Jamal Merritt hasn't taken any unofficial visits, and says that no schools have even been in contact as of late. Yep, not a real offer.

Longshot FL LB Tony Steward continues to mention Rutgers. FL DE Anthony Chickillo will probably stay in the South. FL OL/DL Ruben Carter favors FSU, and FL OL/DL Georgio Newberry could soon follow. FL DB Khambrel Garland is claiming a RU offer, but let's wait and see for the moment. FL QB Phillip Ely is announcing next week and RU isn't a finalist. FL LB Denzel Perryman grew up a Miami fan. FL DT Terry Bell's coach doesn't know if RU is still interested.

Ever wanted to find out what the early stages of the football recruiting process look like when in middle school? Now you're in luck. I'm sure a Lane Kiffin scholarship offer will be forthcoming.

Former New Brunswick coach John Quinn left for Elizabeth, so his replacement is going to be former Rutgers assistant Robert Jackson.

Greg Schiano has never signed a player from St. Peter's Prep, but coach Rich Hansen has always maintained that he has a good relationship with Rutgers. Hansen came off pretty well in his Wednesday chat with State of Rutgers, which will only increase fan optimism about landing one or more of their three DI prospects this year. For all your Prep needs, check these Youtube video interviews with Hansen and Sheldon Royster. By the way, if you're wondering about that NJSIAA conflict he mentioned, read this article from over the weekend.

PA RB Jameel Poteat committed to Pitt as expected, and he was joined by PA DB Terrell Chestnut. It's unfortunate to finish second for both players as RU did with Mangiro, although at least there are some good RBs and DBs left on the board. It'll be interesting to see whether that pair can nab Kyshoen Jarrett away from PSU. FL WR Tacoi Sumler committed to Oregon. FL DE Anthony Rabasa committed to Notre Dame. FL ATH Torrey Campbell committed to Iowa.

Watchlist: This is a section of this site's weekly recruiting posts featuring links to players that Rutgers may or may not be showing interest in, but has not yet offered.
