Committed players
Pennsylvania tight end Tyler Kroft is verbal #6 on the year, having picked Rutgers over Northwestern and UVA.
Verbal #7 was a local in DT Daryl Stephenson. This year's defensively class is quickly and nicely rounding into form.
#8 was South Jersey DE Kyle George.
Scarlet Report checks in with a free article on DT commit Al Page.
Keith Sargeant looks at Chas Dodd's quest to back up Tom Savage.
Kristian Dyer has some extremely high praise for Casey Turner. He's underrated, but that's setting expectations very high.
Taj Alexander blocked a field goal at Saturday's Big 33 game.
Uncommitted players
One of the biggest early events in the recruiting season is a school's annual summer camp, and that's right around the corner at Rutgers now that the Big Man Academy is in the books. This is not an explicit prediction, but based on past history there should be some developments coming out of camp.
D.C. QB Kevin Hogan is down to four finalists: Rutgers, Stanford, Vanderbilt, and Virginia, and should be deciding within the next several weeks. That linked post focuses on the UVA slant, and they're the chief concern here. Mike London's staff is on a recruiting upswing, and also happen to badly need Hogan too. Getting a high profile QB is very important for recruiting the other players in any given class, and the runner-up here obviously will have to move on to other QB targets.
PA ATH Terrell Chestnut seems to be focusing on Pitt, WV, RU, and Michigan.
"I like Rutgers quite a bit. I’ve been down there since my freshman and sophomore year. Rutgers is a great school. The academics are big and it feels like home more than any other school. I used to live in New Jersey."
Scott Stump has updates on NJ DE Shilique Calhoun and ATH Miles Shuler. Shuler's going national, spending the weekend at a track meet in North Carolina and finishing in third place with a 10.52.
Box of Mess blog recently caught up with NJ RB Savon Huggins.
Scout writer Kristian Dyer tweets that NY ATH Devon Cajuste likes Rutgers, and especially P.J. Fleck. Yeah, it has to be restated again, there's no way that a Big Ten team doesn't hire away Fleck by next February. Dyer also floated another interesting rumor on Monday.
Edit: Whoops, a link to an old article was here and subsequently removed.
NJ ATH Tanner McEvoy will play quarterback for Bergen Catholic this fall. That article also has a tidbit on sophomore Kevin Olsen from Wayne Hills.
New coach Nunzio Campanile was impressed by McEvoy’s performance Friday at St. Joseph, and he said McEvoy gets better every time out.
"I have a lot of experience with talented quarterbacks, and I think he is athletically as gifted as any kid I’ve ever coached," Campanile said
Campanile of course was the offensive coordinator at Don Bosco before taking the BC job.
NJ TE Jack Tabb camped at the other BC this week
State of Rutgers has an update on NJ RB Ben Martin.
One reason DeVante Waugh is such an unknown on the recruiting scene could be that he hasn't been able to camp or visit schools yet.
PA RB Jameel Poteat visited Cincinnati last week. PA DE Branden Jackson will camp at Pitt along with his teammate Delvon Simmons. NBE Football ranks the top 25 players in PA.
VA DE Rob Burns just keeps on growing. Several RU offerees attended the Baltimore Under Armour Combine (2). MD DB Jamal Merritt is interested in Rutgers.
FL OL Tony Posada was a recent visitor to Michigan. Posada and teammate QB Phil Ely then camped at Florida. Florida leads for FL RB Mike Blakely. Other longshot targets camped at UF too. FL WR Tacoi Sumler will name a top 10 soon. FL OL/DL Georgio Newberry isn't paying attention to conference expansion rumors.
There's that Pitt in NJ article I talked about yesterday that mentions a few mutual targets. Ironically, it seemed to focus on players who weren't looking at Pitt as much, and ignored others who are better bets to become Panthers. For instance, how do you include that George quote?
One Delaware high school is in hot water for allegations of recruiting players.
CT OL Tommy Jordan committed to Florida, as had been expected. FL LB Ryan Shazier committed to Florida. Supposedly South Carolina DB commit Jared Henry had a RU offer. FL WR Rashad Greene committed to FSU, while his teammate WR Phil Dorsett chose Miami. FL DE Clay Burton committed to Notre Dame. Despite Jeff Driskel's verbal, Florida may try to flip QB Jerrard Randall from Oregon. While unlikely to be on RU's radar, a class of 2010 DE who signed with Maryland, Javarie Johnson, is already transferring.
Watchlist: This is a section of this site's weekly recruiting posts featuring links to players that Rutgers may or may not be showing interest in, but has not yet offered.
Ronald "Duke" Baines, Eddie Goldman, P.J. James, Kendall Patterson, Bernie Sarra, and Jamie Williams.
