The other shoe drops

From the Houston Chronicle

Texas Southern is in the process of completing its 2009 football schedule with a road game against Rutgers of the Big East Conference.

A TSU athletic spokesman said Thursday that the school is waiting on the contract.

What do you know, the whole random message board poster out of the blue comes through.

The rumored future schedule developments are a positive, and a feather in Tim Pernetti's cap if they come to fruition. On the other hand, this game is the culmination of years of mismanagement in the athletic department. There's no way to sugar coat it: Rutgers is going to have the worst schedule in FBS in 2009. This game reflects poorly on both the football program and athletic department. Scheduling two FCS teams cannot ever be allowed to happen again.

Even if Rutgers had lucked out and found a mid-major willing to come in at the last minute, the 2009 schedule still would have represented a significant downgrade from the past few years.
