Quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus was the recruiter of record for both players. Mangus currently has five commitments in the class – defensive end/linebacker Mason Harris, wide receiver Damiere Byrd, and offensive lineman Kyle Harris. He is also the recruiter of record for safety Sheldon Royster and quarterback Tanner McEvoy, both of whom are expected to commit to the Gamecocks on Thursday.
— That quote is from
247 sports affiliate
The Big Spur. Just to be clear, that is from TBS and not this site, although the writing certainly looks to be on the wall with Mangus
back in New Jersey tonight. Listen, if a player wants to commit somewhere else, you move on to the next guy on your board. No class is going to live or die with one player, even if he's Savon Huggins.
That being said, losing Royster would particularly sting because South Caroliina already has 28 verbal commits this year, and they have other rumored silent verbals who haven't gone public yet. They will easily sign 30+ players this year. Even taking into account non-qualifiers and early enrollees, they will make a mockery of NCAA and even SEC regulations against the practice of
oversigning players. Multiple players will be forced to give up their scholarships in the coming months. It's a disgusting, shameful practice, and
sadly endemic to SEC schools, which largely treat their student athletes as pieces of meat. If you haven't yet seen ESPN's
Outside the Lines video on oversigning, it's an absolute must watch.
edit: Dr. Saturday had a
good oversigning writeup today as well.
