Rutgers football scores highest ever graduation rate

We already knew that Rutgers football's academic performance improved by leaps and bounds during Greg Schiano's tenure as head coach, and that knowledge was strengthened today with the news that the 2002-2005 teams achieved the program's best ever scores, which were seventh nationally, and the highest in the Big East this year. This isn't the perfect metric, as students receive six years to graduate, and then it takes time to compile the data, but you sure would rather be doing well here than not. The athletic department's full scores are available here, along with a more detailed breakdown.

JUST NOT RUTGERS: Saturday is an ironic Homecoming game for USF freshman LB Tashon Whitehurst, who backed out of a commitment to Syracuse the week before signing day to choose the Bulls, in part because they were much closer to his Gainesville home. Whitehurst, who turned heads with a blocked punt against Florida State and could be a starter next season, said Orange coach Doug Marrone was understanding when he called about his change but oddly relieved it wasn't another Big East rival that beat him.

"He was excited. Not really excited, but he was happy for me because he thought I was going to say Rutgers," said Whitehurst, whose family will be in attendance Saturday. "He didn't want me to go to Rutgers. He was like, 'That's a great choice for you and I hope you have a good future. That's a good decision for yourself, close to home.' "

Yeah, his brother plays for them, and L.J. didn't really say anything bad, so you can't get on him too hard for this. It's not fair to be too critical considering that Rutgers did not recruit Nate despite him literally growing up in their backyard in Highland Park. He's a good player too, earning playing time for Temple as a freshman. Still, this brings to mind how Smith graduated a decade ago with a strained relationship with Greg Schiano. They eventually buried the hatchet, but you can't help but wonder whether things would be different if he had a better experience on the banks. He's definitely one of the most polarizing players in recent Rutgers history, with fans tantalized by his potential but beyond frustrated by his inconsistent hands.
