Best Game of the Year: This is what a good team does against an inferior opponent. There were some worrisome signs against Hartford and Morgan State as Rutgers struggled top put them away—Hartford coming down to the end game. But tonight, Rutgers came out and stomped on CCS’s neck. They forced turnovers, moved the ball wisely and got good looks with the big men. Rutgers towered over CCS and used that to their advantage.
Holy Slams*: The RAC is now located in #Dunkscataway, as Rutgers put on a show at the rim. Nigel Johnson, Corey Sanders, Mike Williams, and Deshawn Freeman all had rim rattling dunks and gave the fans at the RAC something to scream about. They attacked the rim on run outs. This is what athleticism can do.
What Does This Mean: First off, Rutgers is at 8 wins. They had 7 all last year. And they played smart and did what they should. Before this game, I was convinced a slip up against Stony Brook, FDU or Fordham was coming. And to be honest, it still might. But not if Rutgers puts together an effort like this. They looked like a smart, well coached basketball team.
Make a Shot: Rutgers still can’t shoot it. (Well, okay Issa Thiam got hot late). But until Rutgers can find someone to make a three pointer early in the game, they will struggle offensively. It can’t be said enough—in college hoops you can’t win if you don’t defend or shoot the three well. Rutgers has done both poorly in previous seasons. The defense is improving here, but will the shooting? Meanwhile, get out on the recruiting trail, guys!
