RU Wrestling: DelVecchio Wins 133-Pound Clarion Open Title

Wrestling unattached, sophomore 133-pounder Scott DelVecchio became the Rutgers wrestling team’s first open champion of the season Sunday, posting a perfect 4-0 mark to take first place at the Clarion Open. The No. 1-seeded DelVecchio earned the title with a 6-4 decision in the finals against Jade Rauser (Utah Valley). The open championship is the second of DelVecchio’s career after he won the National Collegiate Open at 133 pounds to end last season.

Freshman Anthony Giraldo placed at 133 pounds, as well, defeating Chase Zemenak (Bloomsburg) with a 3-2 decision in the third-place match. Rookie 149-pounder John Van Brill as the only other Scarlet Knight to place, finishing his day in fourth place. Van Brill went 6-2 with four major decisions on the day, dropping a 10-5 match in the quarterfinals to David Habat (Edinboro) before wrestling back to the third-place match. In that bout, he was bested, 11-3, by Joseph Galasso (Finger Lakes WC).

Sophomore 141-pounder Tyson Dippery reached the semifinals in his side of the bracket as the No. 2 seed before suffering two injury defaults to get knocked one win shy of placing. Corsaro finished one-win shy of the 157-pound third-place match, falling by a 12-4 major decision against Edinboro’s Ty Schoffstall.
