With all the change afoot recently in Piscataway, Rutgers fans can at least take comfort in one constant: if it's April, then the Rutgers defense is going to be walloping the offense. That's essentially what happened in the first scrimmage of the year, with Gary Nova and Chas Dodd both struggling in windy conditions.
The poor performances weren't all their fault though, with the defense registering multiple sacks, in addition to not allowing much in the way of rushing yardage either. Therein lies the key question - how much of this performance was attributable to offensive line struggles, and how much was to Rutgers having a complete embarrassment of riches to harass opposing QBs with on defense? Is new coordinator Robb Smith not planning to relent one iota when it comes to pressure?
The critical aspect over the next few days should be watching if any lineup shuffles are announced. Starters D.C. Jefferson, Kaleb Johnson, Scott Vallone, and Khaseem Greene are already sitting out, and Betim Bujari and Jawan Jamison were felled by minor injuries yesterday. Taj Alexander is still starting over R.J. Dill at right tackle, Ka'Lial Glaud is the starting weakside end, and Lorenzo Waters is in place at strong safety.
