Rutgers law school merger proposal floated
There's been a lot of talk on this on Rivals, so it's interesting to see it finally come to fruition. The Newark and Camden schools may merge, but there is...nothing in the proposal about consolidating the schools in New Brunswick. Plus, this might be endangered by the Rowan merger. In general though, it makes a lot of sense for RU to consolidate its law schools into one great one (with considerably higher admissions standards.)

Not a good move
It’s really hard for tier two schools to move up in the rankings. And admission standards are not dictated by the school as much as the market. They would have to trim a lot of fat, and they would need far greater commitments from the alumni to pump available jobs to Rutgers grads over schools in Philly and New York. Newark is a decent mid tier legal market, even then Rutgers isn’t given priority real estate in those jobs. If anything, they should pump more resources into Rutgers-Newark law.
Some other factors against merger.
Newark law just got a brand new building a few years ago. Nothing similar is available now in New Brunswick, and the only room to build such a facility is in the wastelands of Piscataway.
Being only a short train ride away from Manhattan helps with admissions, attracting top-notch faculty members and adjuncts, and recruiting (jobs, that is, not linebackers). By comparison, as to these factors, New Brunswick might as well be in the middle of the Pine Barrens.

there's no way SHU Law should be above RU-Newark and RU-Camden
but it is, mainly because resources are split, and political factors keep the admissions standards too low.
Rutgers Newark has a ton of resources
Admission standards are less related to “politics”. They are dictated by the relative choices out there or by financial aid (scholarship) money offered to students. Rutgers-Newark is far superior over SHU and Rutgers-Camden. But, compared to SHU, RU-Newark’s alumni base are a bunch of kittens. They don’t fight for jobs for their alma maters, and they give less than Seton Hall. A merger is a terrible idea. If anything, Rutgers should divest Rutgers-Camden and focus on Newark.
