Why Kyle Flood Is The Right Head Coach For Rutgers

Hey folks, I should probably introduce myself real quick. I'm Brandon C., the manager at the SB Nation Yankees site Pinstripe Alley, and a writer at the SB Nation Rangers site, Blueshirt Banter. I talked to Jon tonight and I'm going to be writing here about the basketball and football teams every once in a while.

Anyway, I am a Rutgers man, and when I heard the news of Greg Schiano's departure for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, I couldn't believe it. I'm actually very happy for him, and I would have taken the job if I was him too. My immediate thought was "Rutgers is a "big" school now, we can get a "big name" coach. Then, after thinking it through, I made my decision.

I wanted the Interim Coach to get the job. And he did, as Kyle Flood was named the Head Coach of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

The reasoning is simple.

Greg Schiano was not the program anymore when he left. The recruits came for the school, the programs, and more importantly the individual coaches. By hiring from within, Rutgers gets to keep the recruits.

Also, when I talked to multiple current players (didn't get the names) they all said they "want Flood, keep it in the family."

Rutgers is still a Family without Schiano. The hiring of Flood makes that a certainty.

Go Redsox!!

But really I agree with everything you said. Im a 49ers fan, I follow Anthony Davis on twitter, and he was big on Kyle Flood getting the job. As long as they keep the majority of their 4 star recruits and Darius Hamilton ill be happy with this hire.

Ban Collin B!

Poor guy can’t almost anything right.

Seriously, I’m fine with the selection. I expected him to be a finalist.

Re Giacone…if he’d pick the french over us at this point than we’ve avoided a problem.

Mike Giacone has flipped to BC

Hopefully this is the only flip that happens.

Steve Longa will sign his LOI with Rutgers tomorrow.

Lambert will likely sign tomorrow as wrll but it may be with Iowa and not Rutgers. I would say Rutgers has to be the favorite.

Flood's contract was unanimosly agreed on by the BOG

5 years, 4.75 million

That mean’s he is the lowest paid coach in the Big East and RU will save about 1.3 million per year from GS’ contract. Hopefully they use that money to try and get a big name DC.

Nice early test for the coach..

how the D. Coordinator thing plays out will be telling. If Flood is as bright as everybody says, then hiring a top flight DC to continue the dominance of this returning defense is priority #1.

That is today ...

Let’s keep this real simple – Flood will either be Good, Adequate, or Bad. If he is really Good – and they win the Big East – the contract will be re-written. Just Adequate or Bad and Rutgers will do a thorough search find a better HC & pay Floor to go away.

Great Press Conf

I thought TP and KF said all the right things.

Agreed

No ‘deer in headlights’ type looks or responses. Business as usual for Pernetti. Flood on the other hand, being his first official time in the spotlight as head coach, he did great. He came across as in control and really owned the conference. His answers were to the point, and to a certain extent bland without being evasive.

I liked his confidence and his genuine appreciation for the opportunity. Looking forward to see him coach on gamedays.

It seems as if RU might have found their next DC
Just heard from a NJ source that Tom Bradley is in line to be Rutgers’ next D-coordinator. Recruits apparently were tipped off to keep them.

That would be nice first move by the Flood Regime

If it turns out true, Bradley gets an extremely talented group of athletes to work with for the next couple years. Gives him a chance to distance himself from PSU and rebuild his image as a viable HC some where. Gives RU a quality coach, who also has great recruiting ties in the northeast. Even if he only stayed for 2-3 years, it would be a win-win for everyone.

I’m not a fan of the guy based on just interviews and stuff, but that’d be a fantastic hire.
