i guess the dreams of a top 15 recruiting class are over

I would imagine that both Darius and Devin go elsewhere and it would not surprise me to see Denman, Brodie, Muller, and possibly Peoples go elsewhere.

I'm Muller's brother

This is a devastating turn of events. Schiano was just over our house recruiting last week telling my family about how much family means to him and how proud he was of the Rutgers team that he has built. Our whole family is devastated now. He looked us right in the eye and told us how he was so excited for the upcoming season. Now, I honestly have no idea where my brother is going to go, he loved Rutgers, but after this, who knows.

by Doug_M on Jan 26, 2012 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

I always thought that you should pick a program/school

Instead of a coach. I understand people being upset about having a coach leave and how that can change things but if your brother truly loves RUTGERS and not just Schiano I dont see why he would have to go to a different school.

by Collin B on Jan 26, 2012 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, I agree to you to an extent. But think of who he is going to be spending most of his time with, the coaches. Who got him interested in Rutgers, the coaches. Who fills you with ideas of family, trust and stability; preparing you for an eventual career in the NFL, (hopefully) the coaches. When someone promises all of these things to you and then leaves it creates a breach of trust.

On top of this, all of the people we have talked to and built relations with, Coach Flood and Coach Angelico, those jobs are in jeopardy as well.

by Doug_M on Jan 26, 2012 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

Well Coach Flood has been named the interim head coach

I hope Mr. Muller makes the decision that is best for him, but hopefully Chris, along with all the other RU verbals decide to stay part of the family and continue to build Rutgers into the powerhouse they were becoming

by seton hall and steelers on Jan 26, 2012 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

If he were to pick solely based on the school, he could have gone to PSU who has a much richer history, more bowl wins, etc. But the coaching staff at Rutgers were so personable and gave the impression that they wanted Chris because he was a good player, that they were going to help him become the best he could be scholastically and on the field.

They didn’t say, come to Rutgers because we are Rutgers. They said come here because this is what we can offer you.

by Doug_M on Jan 26, 2012 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

And they can still offer all of that. It is just minus one guy

The philosophy at Rutgers won’t change. There will just be a different guy at the top. #believe

The biggest thing we were worried about was that the staff could be scrapped with a new head coach. With Flood being promoted that bodes well hopefully for stability which would have me lean towards him staying, but until I ask him I won’t know.

Sounds good

I wish him the best in his decision. He has a bright future no matter where he goes

Best wishes to Chris

I have faith in Tim Pernetti’s ability to hire the right guy. I hope Chris stays with Rutgers. If not, I’d understand, but my family, friends, and I (we all have season tickets) would love to watch Chris become the next Anthony Davis.

Why now!?

Couldn’t he have at least waiting until AFTER signing day??

by ender0887 on Jan 26, 2012 11:47 AM EST reply actions

In all honesty, I think that would have been a worse thing to do. At least for the sake of these kids, they still have the choice to go somewhere else, as painful as that sounds. It looks a lot worse to have signed all these recruits and then say “thanks guys, I’m outta here.”

by Kev5446 on Jan 26, 2012 11:56 AM EST up reply actions

Go get Jim Tressel - he's looking for a head coaching job

Or just promote Cignetti to head coach and keep the whole coaching staff intact. Then go get a Defensive Coordinator with heavy NJ ties. Recruits have the same staff and atmosphere. RU would hold the class together.

I doubt Pernetti is suprised by any of this. He’d have known Schiano was interviewing and had contingency plans ready to go.

Either way, I worry with Feb. 1 only six days away.

So Awful

At this point, I’m hoping that he doesn’t pull a Todd Graham and send a text to Pernetti to tell his players for him. At least have the decency to tell them in person that you’re leaving.

Stunning

Don’t the Bucs realize that Schiano NEVER won the weak Big East Conference, never beat a ranked team on the road, never beat a ranked team outside of the Big East Conference, was a horrible in-game coach, only had one really good season 6 YEARS AGO, and put together a string of 7-8 win Bowl appearances in the most minor of Bowl Games by padding the schedule with weak competition.

i wish him luck but guys like him (or just about any former college coaches period) dont have a great track record in the unforgiving world of the NFL.

Years ago someone told Polynesian DNA that everyone was surrounded by sea monsters and it believed them. Agreed

The culture is already established at RU and he would fall in line with that. If RU fell back to top 20 APR but was winning BCS bowls, I think most wouldn’t even notice.

We can't do better than Cristobal?

Wish Schiano the best of luck but the timing blows. The best bet is to promote Cignetti and hopefully keep some coaches and recruits. But if we do hire from outside, tell me we can do better than Mario Cristbal.

Schiano calling a staff meeting right now

Barring a last minute change, the deal is done. However, it has not been signed and he could still pull a Chip Kelly but very unlikely.

by seton hall and steelers on Jan 26, 2012 1:11 PM EST reply actions

I don't see him having much success

As grateful as I am to Schiano for doing everything he did for RU and bringing the team to new heights, I’m doubtful that he will be a great NFL coach. If Saban and Spurrier couldn’t do it, what makes anyone think Schiano can?

by Kev5446 on Jan 26, 2012 1:16 PM EST reply actions

Success or not, it's a new challenge.

Life is too short to be placed in situations where you feel you aren’t being challenged enough. I think Schiano got to that point at Rutgers. Doesn’t mean RU wasn’t a challenge for him, just that it didn’t represent enough new challenges for him. He got an offer that represented a completely new challenge in the next (and highest) level of football competition. I can understand why he did it. Though I can also say pretty confidently, he won’t be retiring as the Tampa Bay Buccaneer’s head coach. He’s back on the coaching carousel.

by TheJomo on Jan 26, 2012 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

so he got bored with not accomplishing his college goals

and now wants to try not accomplishing some NFL goals?

it’s not the challenge, its the 18.5 million extra dollars the bucs will be giving him that RU won’t and shouldn’t give him.

it’s nice to think he’s doing it for idealistic reasons, but come on, what job wouldn’t anybody leave for 18 million dollars?

Leonte Carroo has already been. contacted by

Miami, Boston College, and many more. I think might stay at RU but as of know, it certainly looks like the wheels are falling off of the RU football train.

Ha. Wheels are falling off?

Seems a bit extreme. Not many of these players were playing from day 1 anyway. If this year ends up being a down recruiting year so be it. If Pernetti has a good hire in place, it will all take care of itself going forward.

Plus who’s to say that all these recruits leave anyway? Let it all play out and what will be, will be. It’s certainly not the end of the world.

by TheJomo on Jan 26, 2012 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

The thing I don't get

I remember when he turned down Miami and Michigan and said something like, “I will stay at Rutgers as long as the school continues to work with me to do what’s necessary to build the program.”

stadium expansion – got it

recruiting lounge – got it

What didn’t he get?

by RUMike on Jan 26, 2012 2:07 PM EST reply actions

The challenge of coaching at the highest level of professional football...the NFL

He gets the chance to be the head of an NFL team. It’s a challenge completely different from anything that Rutgers, Miami or Michigan could ever offer.

by TheJomo on Jan 26, 2012 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

He's in for a challenge...

NFL teams won’t wait for him to deliver. There will be no “building” in Tampa. He delivers or no. I think he’ll really miss Rutgers’ friendly confines (and his contract) when and 8-9 or 9-8 record won’t cut it anymore.

by raritan17 on Jan 26, 2012 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think any coach has illusions of retiring from the game with the same team / program when they are 45

Tampa Bay won’t be the last stop for Schiano. He took the challenge, the money and inevitable future of being on the coaching carousel for the rest of his career.

by TheJomo on Jan 26, 2012 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

He didn't get.....

A real Conference. Once Navy popped on board the exit fee doubled to leave the Big East and he may have been lied to about the future. Then suddenly he gets a 2nd interview the next day. I think Pernetti screwed this up real good.

by B.j. Budapesti on Jan 26, 2012 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

If Pernetti had that much power over conference realignment, Rutgers wouldn't be in the Big East

This isn’t Pernetti’s fault. Schiano got the opportunity to be a NFL head coach. It’s not like he left RU for another college job.

by TheJomo on Jan 26, 2012 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

I’ts not Pernetti’s fault that no one invited Rutgers. The bottom line is that RU didn’t win enough games, and has never won the Big East. I love coach Schiano, and as depressed as I am right now, I truly wish him the best, but if he won more games and a conference championship we probably would have been in another conference right now.

by Kev5446 on Jan 26, 2012 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

According to the Ledger (via Lucci):

Among the early coaching candidates that Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti is expected to make a run at are Miami coach Al Golden, a New Jersey native, FIU coach Mario Cristobal (a former Rutgers assistant), Temple coach Steve Addazio and former Penn State assistant Tom Bradley. Offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti is also a possible candidate.

by TheJomo on Jan 26, 2012 2:37 PM EST reply actions

Al Golden would be great, but even with the scandal at Miami, I’m not sure he would make the switch to RU. Mario Cristobal seems to be the front-runner: no downside, sort of a Schiano clone in the way he runs a team. Not sure RU is good enough for Steve Addazio to leave Temple so soon. Wouldn’t mind Tom Bradley, but there will always be people out there who disapprove because of the Penn State scandal. Not sure how I feel having an offensive guy being head coach.

All in all, I think I would be most comfortable with Mario Cristobal.

He ran a football program for 11 years. It was time for a new challenge and it wasn’t involving another college program. This had less to do with Rutgers and more to do with human nature. It was simply time for a new challenge.

Gotta find that diamond in the rough.. again. I dont see many big time coaches coming though. Maybe we should look at recently fired NFL coaches. Maybe they would like the idea of college coaching. I’ve also read that Muller, Brodie, Denman, Rankin, and Peoples were re-opening their commitments. According to scarletreport.com, many of them will meet with each other and discuss whether they should all stay or go their separate ways. I don’t think I have to point out what we’re all hoping for.

Also, Leonte has set up a visit with Miami for this weekend so he might be a lost cause but hopefully the meeting they all have tonight convinces them all to stay at Rutgers. . However, Leonte said his is going to visit Miami because Darius is and he does not know if he is interested in them yet. Here are some quotes from an ESPN article
Three-star receiver Ruhann Peele, who committed to Rutgers last April, said he plans to honor that commitment as long as wide receivers coach P.J. Fleck remains on staff.
Giacone said he was uncertain about his recruiting situation but added that he will at least consider exploring other options
Toal said he had spoken to Hamilton, who was scheduled to announce his college decision Tuesday, and Carroo, who committed to Rutgers in August over several other scholarship offers. Since the news broke, Carroo has also seen his phone ringing off the hook with places like Illinois, Syracuse and Miami already reaching out.

“They’re concerned,” Toal said. “Both guys are real concerned. They have to be. They believed coach Schiano was going to be their coach. … You can’t blame these kids. They want some stability and they want some answers. They want to know where this thing is going. No question.”

Toal said neither prospect will wait until after signing day Feb. 1 to announce their decision, meaning they’ll need a quick decision from Rutgers if the Scarlet Knights hope to stay in the hunt.

“They’re not going to wait until after national signing day,” Toal said. “I’ll tell you that right now. They’re not going to wait.”

draftdatabase.wordpress.com

by seton hall and steelers on Jan 26, 2012 4:22 PM EST reply actions

Here is about as good of a sign for Rutgers as has happened since GS left
Darius Hamilton’s dad, Keith, said they’ll have long talk on flight down to Miami & decide after weekend. ’I know that coaches come and go"

This means that maybe, just maybe, Darius will still stay along because he understands that is is more about the program then the coaches. Also, in the article I quoted above, Toal inferred that Darius had picked Rutgers as his school. You can see that in the “They believed coach Schiano was going to be thier coach”

by seton hall and steelers on Jan 26, 2012 4:26 PM EST reply actions

This is a quote from Brodie's coach
George said that Brodie has now re-opened his recruiting and that Connecticut, which was in his final two, and other schools will be considered as well.

draftdatabase.wordpress.com

by seton hall and steelers on Jan 26, 2012 4:29 PM EST reply actions

More quotes. First one about Giancone and second one about Lambert. Third one about Hamilton
Mike Giacone, a tight end from St. Peter’s, is now reconsidering his options and re-connected with schools he had previously considered — Connecticut, Boston College and Wisconsin.
“He is reconsidering his options and is trying to balance everything right now and give it a day or so,” Hansen said.
Lambert, the four-star linebacker from Timber Creek, has not de-committed from Rutgers, said his coach Rob Hinson. Yet, he will reach out to the schools that made his final three or six to make sure that he is not left flat-footed when a new coach is named. Until then he will take a “wait and see” approach.
As for Hamilton, Toal said that Rutgers is not out of the running but it all depends on how quickly a new coach is hired.
“They’re young men, they have to make a decision,” Toal said. “Things have changed. If Rutgers is smart they calm the waters right away and make a decision who their guy is. They have to do it before signing day. I would think they have to do it pretty quick because there’s too much riding on it.”

In Pernetti's Press Conference

he said he has an “A-list” of coaches he wants and that he has been contacted by high profile coaches already. Maybe he can lure Al Golden to come to Rutgers. He said he will work his hardest to hire a coach before Signing Day and that he is now a member of the coaching staff which allows him to recruit the players.
