Gannett NJ cutbacks fallout
For those wondering about what was going to happen at Gannett's papers, the dagger finally fell a couple days ago. (Check out this column that the Daily Record actually published.)
As to how the cuts will directly impact Rutgers sports, my understanding is that Gannett NJ will still provide excellent coverage of the teams, albeit at a diminished level. That probably looked to be the most likely result on paper, but anything was possible in the face of such drastic cutbacks.
What is publicly known is that Paul Franklin is out. Rutgers/Targum alumnus Mike New, who wrote about high school sports, has also taken a job in publishing. There is one other known departure that will have a negative impact on future Rutgers coverage.
Update: Jerry Carino shares more thoughts on the cutbacks.
As an aside, Gannett's latest earnings report showed profits up 30%. Their online revenues are up - thanks to ventures like Career Builder, they make more than the New York Times on the net. Print publishing is in decline however.
