Around SBN: Welcome To A Bizarre Afternoon With Donald Driver

Mark Blaudschun from the Boston Globe is well-established as a mouthpiece for the Big East conference leadership. Blaudschun's story today about merging the Big East with Conference USA and the Mountain West can only inspire two possible, related reactions.

1. Pure horror and revulsion.
2. Now more than ever, it is crystal clear that the Big East conference leadership stands firmly against the Big East football schools, and is trying to thwart and denigrate them at every turn. What possible upside is there for Big East football in this story? Merely contemplating this scenario is crossing an unforgivable rubicon.

It is in the interests of the Big East conference to extract as large a television contract as possible for all sports, but that isn't necessarily in the best interest of the traitorous basketball schools. For all the talk of collective good, they only care about their own immediate gratification, and have zero regard for any possible consequences. This leak is a shot across the bow against Big East football, and the continued behind the scenes angling to take the conference's television rights to the open market. The basketball schools now that they are the losers in any split, and are making a last ditch effort to flex their muscles and jockey for negotiating position. It won't work, and this latest gesture of bad faith will do them no favors once the knives really start coming out.

Get us into a new conference, Pernetti.

This monstrosity won't last long

The last time anyone tried to make a 16 team conference it lasted all of three years, culminating in the creation of the Mountain West. Do these MWC schools really expect history to not repeat?
The smart move is to stay far away from this clusterfuck and take the best teams as soon as the fractures start showing, but then again who said anyone involved in the decision making process of the conference is smart?

I don't see how this helps the basketball schools--or anyone.

I guess your theory is that it chains UConn, Cincinatti and Louisville/West Virginia to the CYO schools?

I think that what has happened is that the Big East can’t lure anyone onto the sinking ship. Maybe UCF, Houston and SMU (never mind the military academies) weren’t interested in an invite unless BE could guarantee they keep the AQ or even keep eight all-sports schools, which they can’t?

I guess it keeps UC, UC, RU and USF in SOME conference...

But I don’t think this conglomeration is much better than being independent.

I really think there have been a chain of phone conversations much like:

Boise to BE: “OK, call us when you have UCF, Houston and SMU committed.”
Houston, SMU: “Sounds like something worth discussing. Give us a call when you have Boise committed.”

No one wants to jump to Big East football right before it implodes. Which means it’s imploding.

it's not a serious proposal

they are trying to diminish the value of Big East football by presenting this as a realistic option.

Update your paranoia, OTB

They have destroyed the value of Big East football, to the point that this is a realistic option.
The value of Big East football has declined to the point that UCF, SMU, Houston and Boise State aren’t willing to sign on.

big east football still rakes in plenty of dough

and would be a step up for those schools money-wise even without the BCS bid.

UCF has never said anything but that they are waiting for an official invite so they can accept.

any hesitation is caused because none of the football schools want to be stuff in a conference with the basketball schools. thats why schools left, thats why schools still want to leave and thats why schools are hesitant to join.

why do you keep posting incorrect speculation as if it were fact and ignoring why the conference is such a mess in the first place?how many times do you have to be corrected?

and yet

Big East football is still a far more valuable television commodity than the best basketball conference in the country.

the plan blaudschun is retarded

it wouldnt be worth keeping a bcs bid with that many teams. 1) the bcs money would be split up among too many teams and 2) you’d be better off trying to get a bid as a non bcs wild card.

the whole ordeal is a farce.

Chill

Why are you overreacting to every story? It says nothing of this being the Big East’s idea or even of them agreeing?

by StyleKnight on Oct 22, 2011 7:06 PM EDT reply actions

it says nothing that they are agreeing

but it does say its a plan the big east is considering and is information coming from a big east source.

its pretty obvious that there is an official from a basketball school feeding info to the globe reporting in hopes of getting this ridiculous plan more attention. its bush league from everyone involved.

This is the story to overreact to.

This is a Boston Globe story. A news story, not a name-brand columnist talking out his rear end.

OTB says that the writer is plugged in to the Big East leadership. What kind of sources do you think the Boston Globe has in the Big East? In the Mountain West? In Conference USA? Right. This story came from Big East HQ, or from a member school.
