Rutgers football recruiting update for the week of 5/4

Commits

The NJ/NE Football Classic has posted a partial roster for the Northeast team. It does not currently include any Rutgers verbals. I'd imagine the verbals from NY/PA/MD could play in the game if interested.

As you may have expected, Greg Schiano is going to have to keep a close eye on wrestling coach Scott Goodale to make sure he's not sneaking bottles of Ipecac to Bound Brook LB Andrew Campolattano.

"Guys who are that good, somewhere along the line they’re going to miss that type of success," said Goodale, the Rutgers coach. "That’s why you never close the door on those guys and say they’ll never wrestle again because I truly don’t believe that."

Bronx DT Al Page continues the recent New York City pipeline to Rutgers.

Page, who has a devastating combination of speed, strength and athleticism for someone his size, has developed at a frenetic pace. He lacked any football experience until his first practice with Columbus. Initially, he used his natural strength to be a playmaker. Coach David Diaz was taken by Page’s tenacity and work ethic. This past fall he began to learn technique.

Djwany Mera impressed in a workout Monday at South Broward H.S.

Uncommited players

The Altoona Mirror has a lot of updates on tons of Rutgers targets attending a recent Nike Camp at PSU. Read it all, and be sure to read both of ESPN's account of the event too. (And there's more from ESPN Rise.)

It sure sounds like Rochester (N.Y.) LB Quentin Gause is enamored with Greg Schiano.

I enjoy speaking with him because I can tell he’s a God-fearing man, who is building a strong family-type foundation for the Scarlet Knights football program.

Yahoo Sports didn't seem to be posting any free recruiting articles last week, but now there's a new one about the new offer to Atco Winslow WR DeVante Waugh.

“They came to the school today,” Waugh said of the Rutgers coaching staff. “I like them. They’re the school just down the street so it’s close to home. I visited during the season. We went up to see a practice.”

Woah, Oregon and Florida are offering ATH Bill Belton? The Gators are already going after ATH Damiere Byrd.

Star-divide

RB Savon Huggins is the only tailback that currently has an offer from Penn State.

"They say they really need me, that I'm the only back they're offering so far," he said. "So I must be doing something right."

The spring evaluation period is in full swing (Tom Lemming elaborates on that), which means prospects like ATH Miles Shuler, S Sheldon Royster, OL Keith Lumpkin, and CB Terrell Chestnut are picking up more offers and interest.

There was a ton of great Shore Conference coverage from Scott Stump over the past week. He reported that Rutgers was poised to offer OL Shane Mertz from Raritan HS in Hazlet, which ended up happening. But wait, there's more. Miles Shuler now has expanded his favorites to a top five, and that article has other news of interest. There are also recent updates on TE/DEs Shilique Calhoun and Jack Tabb.

Speaking of exploding interest, Manchester TE/DE Taques Franklin is now sporting a Michigan offer.

FL RB Tre Mason is high on Rutgers early.

"Rutgers probably, Rutgers and Marshall are the two schools I talk to the most. I know Rutgers is a running school. I like their coaching. Their coaches are really cool and make you feel real comfortable around them. People you want to be around for four years."

Sounds like FL ATH Kevin Grooms doesn't want to go far from home, but won't be deciding soon. Nor am I optimistic on FL DE/LB Curt Maggitt. FL QB Jacoby Brissett could go to UNC if offered a chance to play hoops there. The Miami Herald is already getting a jump on the 2012 and 2013 classes.

VA ATH Dominique Terrell took in WVU's spring game, and doesn't have RU as an early favorite.

Other new reported Rutgers offers out of the spring evaluation period are PA OL Andrew Zeller, VA OL Jay Whitmire, MB LB Conner Crowell, FL LB Ramik Wilson and OL Zach DeBell (both mentioned here along with WR Ja'Juan Story), FL DE Anthony Chickillo, and GA OL Quincy McKinney.

Florida blog The Scout Leader's lists of recruiting targets on offense and defense includes several Rutgers offers, including ones not from Florida.

PA TE Ben Koyack committed to Notre Dame.

Watchlist: This is a section of this site's weekly recruiting posts featuring links to players that Rutgers may or may not be showing interest in, but has not yet offered.

Jamal Abdur-Rahman, Quinton Alston, Vin Ascolese, Deion Barnes (2), Mike Bimonte, Jazzmar Clax, Darian CooperCameron Dickerson, Herzel Glashen, Andre Hodge, Kyshoen Jarrett (2), Gary Laucks, Chris Polony, Jake QuinnDeAndre Reaves, and Tevin Westbrook.
